Country Classification
The PPI Projects Database uses a number of variables to characterize a country.
Some of these variables classify countries in terms of location, income per capita,
and IDA status. Other variables measure supply of infrastructure services. See note
on
GNP
and other terminology. Download the
country classifications file
(MS Excel, 86KB).
Economic Indicators
The PPI Projects database uses a number of World Bank Group indicators to characterize
each country's economy -- the location, income per capita, IDA status and supply
of infrastructure services.
|
- Region: The PPI database uses the World Bank regional groupings
- Gross National Income (GNI) per capita: This indicator is calculated using the Atlas method (current US$). GNI per capita data is from 2007:
World Development Indicators published in July 2008.
- Income group: The
World Bank income categories
are used as published in July 2008.
- IDA status: International Development Association Members: Countries
that are eligible for
IDA lending
(long-term loans at zero interest) on the basis of low per-capita income and lack
of creditworthiness to borrow on market terms. Some "blend borrower" countries eligible
for IDA loans because of their low per person incomes but are also eligible for
IBRD loans because they are financially creditworthy. Eighty-one countries are currently
eligible to borrow from IDA. The PPI database uses county IDA status as published
in July 2008.
- Access to electricity (% of population):
Access to electricity refers to the number of people with access to electricity
(both on-grid and off-grid) as a percentage of the total population.
The PPI database reports 2006 statistics as published in the World Development Indicators.
- Electric power consumption (kwh per capita): Electric power consumption
measures the production of power plants and combined heat and power plants, less
distribution losses, and own use by heat and power plants. The PPI database reports
2006 statistics as published in the World Development Indicators.
- Improved water source (% of population with access): Access to
an improved water source refers to the percentage of the population with reasonable
access to an adequate amount of water from an improved source, such as a household
connection, public standpipe, borehole, protected well or spring, and rainwater
collection. Unimproved sources include vendors, tanker trucks, and unprotected wells
and springs. Reasonable access is defined as the availability of at least 20 liters
a person a day from a source within one kilometer of the dwelling. The PPI database
reports 2006 statistics as published in the World Development Indicators.
- Improved sanitation facilities (% of population with access): Access
to improved sanitation facilities refers to the percentage of the population with
at least adequate excreta disposal facilities (private or shared, but not public)
that can effectively prevent human, animal, and insect contact with excreta. Improved
facilities range from simple but protected pit latrines to flush toilets with a
sewerage connection. The PPI database reports 2006 statistics as published in the
World Development Indicators.
- Total telephone subscribers per 100 inhabitants:
Total telephone (fixed and mobile) telephone subscribers divided by population multiplied by 100.
The PPI database reports 2006 statistics as published by the ITU.
