Recent private participation in airports has focused on stand alone international airports and terminals

Particularly in the last few years, their share in airport projects grew from 57 percent in 1990-2001 to over 90 percent in 2002-05 (figure below). The trend towards private participation in large, international airports was also visible in transaction size. The average investment commitments per project rose from US$200 million in 2003 to US$750 million in 2005. While the 2005 average is strongly influenced by the large Ataturk and Budapest transactions, it is worth noting that during that year, five other airport transactions that reached financial closure in 2005 attracted commitments exceeding US$300 million each.
